What’s the value in immediacy?

13/05/2008

I’ve been battling with a problem (one must put issues in relative perspective with all the tragedies in China and Myanmar atm) in the recent days. As some may know, I’m doing a motorcycle trip through Europe in July. I want to be able to track my whereabouts and shoot some video and then post it online to share the experience of trip to the extent its possible. However, as I’m thinking about the trip I’m not sure if I should be posting the video online immediately as I shoot it, without any editing, or wait until I get back from the trip to post it all online edited and streamlined.

I know it’s like reality TV, if I post the videos online from all over Europe, but is there really any value in immediacy compared to posting the stuff online later?

European Tour 2008 – first draft

18/04/2008

Above is the first draft of my coming summer’s motorcycling trip. I’m planning to do a 2 week (approx.) trip through Europe. The total lenght of this trip is about 5200km and it starts and ends in Rostock.

The southernmost tip of the trip is a few hundred kilometres below Barcelona. I’m planning to go down through Switzerland, visit Spain and ride through Andorra up through France to champagne country’s Reims, through Luxembourg to Amsterdam. From Amsterdam I’ll be riding through back to Rostock. I might have to do some cutting out as 2 weeks is a relatively tight schedule for a 5200km trip (almost 400km a day).

LeWeb3 Day 1

Hans Rosling

That’s Hans Rosling going on about how we destroy our planet. He’s one of my new heroes :) The other two are definitely Kevin Rose and Evan Williams – two guys who have done incredible things online in terms of social web.

It’s 3.19 am, been awake for almost 24 hours, it’s time to get a few hours sleep and go conferencing again tomorrow. Like my friend said, or almost accused me of – I do actually do feel being here a bit like being in a candy store.

Paris reporting

Paris Metro Station

I’m in Paris at the moment, taking it easy in my hotel room near Porte de la Chapelle metro station. The weather in Paris is equally drastic as it is in Finland and therefore it isn’t very tempting. Nevertheless, I managed to do quite a bit of walking without an umbrella :) (and mind you, it rained non-stop the whole day).

After finding my hotel, (which by the way is still unbuilt in Google Maps images) I recharged my batteries for a while and decided to take the metro to the central to have a look around the city. Managed to grab a few photos, but since I didn’t want to risk breaking my camera in the rain I decided to leave the photoshoots for tomorrow.

I’m in Paris for some R&R as well as business. LeWeb3 is starting Tuesday and I’m participating from Gyllene Skor. It’s going to be exciting to meet lots of interesting people and listen to interesting presentations. I’ll try and Jaiku the conference to our channel on Jaiku – let’s see how Lo?Øc has managed to get the Wifi working ;-)

GPS Motorcycle diaries

2/02/2007

I haven’t been able to get too much sleep this week as I’ve been spending my time with Google Earth v4. I’ve been intrigued with it as it renderes the topology of the landscape as well as cool new features that make sharing information a lot more easier.

With this in mind I’ve been planning my summer’s motorcycle trip that I’ve been planning to do sometime in July. My destination at the moment simply put is Europe. I want to see the green fields of Switzerland and ride on the curvy roads of the Alps and taste some German beers in southern Germany. Something like that anyhow.

Being the extrovert marketing geek that I am, I’ve sort of decided to start a blog/website to keep myself notes of the trip and planning that takes place. Furthermore, I’ve been drooling over some Garmin GPS devices that would be extremely cool while riding in Europe (and make the whole trip a lot more easier navigation-wise). And, I would be able to post my trip online in Google Earth format afterwards…

Hmm… I think I’ll attend the motorcycle exhibition first and start further planning afterwards :)
