Internet addicts sent home from the army
August 4th, 2004Ok, now it has even spread to the CNN, so people will definitely know about this: Web addiction excuses conscripts.
HELSINKI, Finland (Reuters) — A number of Finnish conscripts have been excused their full term of military service because they are addicted to the Internet, the Finnish Defence Forces said on Tuesday.
I’m no supporter of wars or such, even though I consider myself patriotic - I’m proud to be Finnish. But this web addiction stuff - I’m pretty addicted, but still I survived my 6 months as a recon. Its not that I enjoyed the army a lot, but its a tradition in the Finnish history, and that being also the reason why I wished to be part of it.
Or is this just a signal that the Finnish army is so low tech? Maybe if they had more cool gadgets these geeks would stay ;-)
