Finland 3rd in LinkedIn

January 21st, 2004

This was quite interesting, I logged into LinkedIn today after a long time. I looked at the statistics concerning the size of the Network.

Finland is ranked third(!) with over 700 people signed up. I think that’s quite amazing, for a country this size. I also think that the amount of internet usage has to do with this - people have access to internet everywhere. Therefore the infrastructure allows people to create their online personality.

I was going to write something about the online personallity and digital indentity of people in another post, but I’ll just quickly post it here and continue later. Loïc wrote something about it and the importance of it - but one way I realised today how to implement the digital personality and blogs and homepages and such into the real world is quite simple actually.

I’m applying for an exchange in Australia, in Melbourne. The international office here in my university has to decide who to let go, as there are limited amount of places and many more want to go. They made us fill all sorts of forms and such, but they never asked for peoples’ internet addresses - after all, many people have one.

This is definitely a new way to learn about a person. After all, its the way people see you online, your virtual identity and thus create such an image of you in their minds. This of course can differ from your real life identity because of many things, but its a start. Especially in places where a decision has to be made on and about a person, website and blogs especially are a great way to get to know somebody better.

It wouldn’t require a lot from the officials, just start printing a line after the “e-mail”, where it says: “www:”.
