Is your Mac running slow? Reboot the SMC

I’ve experienced a pretty significant slow down in my MacBook Pro’s performance over the year and a half or so that I’ve owned it. I’ve googled and asked around for advice, but people usually told me to upgrade my memory or keep enough empty space available. However, nothing has ever worked as well as the SMC reboot did so I thought of sharing it with others as well. I did the reboot earlier this week and currently it’s like I’m running a brand new Mac.

It’s very simple and one of the commenters on the Mac support forums suggested to do it once a month. I know I will in the future. To do the reboot:

  1. Close all programs.
  2. Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
  3. Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
  4. Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.

Once you restart your Mac again – it should be working a lot faster.
