How Do You Read Your E-mail?

5/01/2009

I’ve been using different installable e-mail applications for a long time and been relatively happy with them. However, recently I’ve begun thinking that maybe I should begin to leave my e-mail in the “cloud” to make it always accessible (through mobile phones for example). In this context, I’m mainly talking about GMail. There are of course advantages and disadvantages to using either of the options, but GMail has recently gotten relatively (if not very) good at handling e-mail as a web app and this has made me ponder whether I should drop the installable applications and simply use e-mail through the browser.

I want to ask you a question – how do you read your e-mail and why?

How come you see installable apps and cloud as competing choices?

I use installable mail app on my home computer and work laptop and my email is in cloud, accessible through GMail.

The installable apps access GMail through IMAP, so everything will be up to date always and accessible through mobile devices and browsers.

Not by default, but when I tweak them they become somewhat competitive. I have rules applied in my MS Entourage that sort my mail locally – and these rules aren’t in sync with GMail (nevertheless they can be found relatively easily).

The reason why I want to separate these accounts somewhat is the noise – I want to keep my work accounts separate from my other accounts. A shameless attempt to create a difference between work and play :)

    1. use gmail
    2. turn on “basic HTML”
    3. “open link in new tab” by clicking the middle button

    Gmail. Period.

I can’t live without threaded conversations, staring and not having to care about organization.

Being able to search through over 4 GB and several years worth of email on my mobile device is tremendously powerful.

I do not have push email setup. Everyone knows that the best way to reach me is SMS, email is for longer form things or for action points that don’t require my immediate attention.

With Google Apps for your Domain you can setup a Gmail account and have your personal domain so antti at vilpponen dot net can be your personal email with all the beautiful Google functionality.
