I don’t write that many political blog entries, because they aren’t the easiest. But – now that I read the sad news that an unarmed Finnish peacekeeper has been killed in Lebanon by Israeli bombs, I had to react. I have followed the conflict from blogs and news and many sources say the same: Israel is using disproportional force in fighting the Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. BBC has the story. If a French commander of the Unifil troops has to call the attacking army stop – doesn’t this sound like there’s something very very wrong?
I also heard from the BBC that secret diplomatic sources said that Israel has until the weekend to bomb Lebanon until a cease fire is put into place (if one is reached between Hezbollah and Israel). I understand that nobody wishes to live under terrorist threats all the time, but if a country with nuclear weapons and supposedly excellent intelligence information bombs unarmed UN peacekeeping troops – something is terribly wrong. I have many friends from Israel and I don’t have anything against the country, but this sort of action makes me very very sad.
