IRC-Galleria blogs

One of the most popular websites in Finland, IRC-Galleria, has given its over 270 000 members blogs. This is probably going to be the biggest blogging community in Finland in about a year’s time, even though most members probably won’t become active bloggers, or how do I know! :)

I worked over 10h today and didn’t get that much sleep last night so I think I’ll read some Anatomy of Buzz and hit the sack…

In which city am I in?

Here’s a little riddle; I came here yesterday to a friends house warming party, but in which city am I in? At the moment I’m in a bar quite close to the railway station, so if you know this bar - tell it to me in the comments :)

I’ll take a photo of some famous place here tomorrow and tell you guys. It’s not suppose to be easy so don’t complain :-)

Update: Ok, I’m back in Lappeenranta and the city where I was… Tampere and the bar was Ellun kanat, a nice small bar where you can actually go just to have a chat, the music isn’t played that loud. All right, I have to work on a paper all evening, so better get to it…

On connectivity

This is something that should already be solved - some 20 odd years into the PC/MAC revolution. I tried to transfer some files to my friend. I connected my Mac to his PC and there was no way we could get the two computers to connect and transfer the files. We have managed to done it before, but now it didn’t work through a direct connection, through a hub or through anything. Then we connected ourselves to the internet, opened up Skype and had a go at that.

And it worked! The sweet thing is that Skype transfers directly to the other computer through the hub and does not go beyond our LAN and therefore the speeds are very good. Now my question is, why can’t this be achieved through normal computer OSs? Shouldn’t be that hard BillG and SteveJ…

Catholic knowledge

Got to love the catholics - or their encyclopedia should I say. Take a look at their entry on Finland;

Grand Duchy of Finland

A department or province of the Russian Empire; bounded on the north by Norway, on the west by Sweden and the Gulf of Bothnia, on the south by the Gulf of Finland. Its limits extend from about 60¬? to 70¬? N. lat., and from about 19¬? to 33¬? E. long.; the area is 141,617 sq. miles. Finland abounds in lakes and forests, buit the proportion of arable soil is small. The population numbers 2,900,000 souls, chiefly Finns; the coasts are inhabited by the descendants of Swedish settlers.

I know they’re traditional in their beliefs, but this is a bit too much…

My Web Two Point Oh! -company

It’s called Delelidoo and we’re working on cellphone-based collaborative document editing on the desktop.

What’s yours?

ps. I love the warning; Note: this is just a little programmatic satire. Any semblance to an actual company is purely accidental and not intentional! It’s supposed to be funny :)

You never know if there’s somebody actually trying to do that!

WWI photographs

Take a look at this photo from Helsinki harbour during the first world war. A guy living in Germany found these photos from some attic and posted them to Flickr. They are simply amazing and they also feature some photos from Finland. The set can be found here.

Sponsorship deal

I have been working aside all my other stuff on a sponsorship deal on my campaign against the new copyright law that I launched a month or so ago. Well, now I can say that one exists! Consoletech has agreed to provide me with hosting and a cool domain that will help keep the campaign alive as long as it’s needed!

This takes off financial burden off my shoulder and makes it realistic for the campaign to be seen online and hopefully offline as well (I have a few tricks up my sleeve) in the future. Hopefully the new site will be up and running before the end of this week!

Oh, the domain will be @ OlenRikollinen.org ;-)

Stay calm, we are evacuating the building…

We had a fire drill at work just now and it forced us to evacuate the building for about 45 minutes. The people who planned this actually threw some smoke bombs into one of the halls to make some smoke and make people think about stuff :) Most of the people here snatched their laptops and walked outside. There were also some people with make up, looking injured.

I was impressed how quickly the building emptied, although I cannot say it was because people were actually getting out of the way of fire, but because the bell must have rang with a force of 120dB! I can still hear it…

It’s a vicious circle I tell ya

Something that doesn’t happen that often here in my apartment happened tonight. The internet was down. I first panicked, as I had a ton of stuff to do at home. Then I just turned restless and didn’t really know what the hell I should do (I had justed woken up from a nap and felt still very very tired). I was thinking of doing some running, but my exhausted state kept me indoors.

Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. I live in a vicious circle of work and different personal projects. I work 8-9 hrs a day at the office to come home to continue on some personal projects and things of interest that I want to pursue. The reason I value these projects so much is that the experience I gain from these would one day be valuable to me in work - and they do serve as my hobbies in a way as well. But when the internet was down, I realised that my life is pretty empty without these things that I use as an excuse to keep improving my chances of landing a good job some day in the future.

I decided to call a friend, spoke an hour with her, I then had some tea and began reading Howard Rheingold’s Smart Mobs (a book I should have read years ago) - then I heard a bling and the network was up again. It’s only 10pm, I could catch up on the work I haven’t done today, but I think I’m gonna enjoy tonight with just reading a book and getting to bed well before the normal past 12pm - waking up in the morning should be a lot easier.

Sometimes it’s just good to pause for a while and take some time for yourself (even during the week).

(After all, tomorrow’s going to be exactly the same as the other days - and possibly worse without the stuff that I didn’t manage to get done tonight, but at least I’m a lot more energetic in the morning)

First snow

I haven’t blogged about this yet, but on Sunday (this pic taken just now) we had this autumns first snow here in Lappeenranta. To be honest, I’m not thrilled at all, on the contrary.

I don’t have that much against winter, but it still sucks. The days without sunlight, depressed gloomy people walking around like zombies and it doesn’t get better until january or so when the days start to get a bit longer again.

I’ll just sip my coffee and continue typing… maybe it will go away.
